Kidderminster, UK (Holiday Visit)

While on holiday I decided to visit a town called Kidderminster. I went to secondary school here, more on the school in a later post, so I am familiar with the area.  Kidderminster is famous for it’s carpet industry. The modern carpet industry was founded in the area in 1785 by Brintons, and the carpet industry became extremely important to the local economy, so much so that the local newspaper is still named The Shuttle after the shuttles used on the carpet looms. In 1951 there were over 30 carpet manufacturers in the town. Although a number of them have closed their doors, the industry is still thriving and selling carpets worldwide.

The town features a famous person who invented the Penny Black postage stamp.

Sir Rowland Hill KCB, FRS (3 December 1795 – 27 August 1879) was an English teacher, inventor and social reformer. He campaigned for a comprehensive reform of the postal system, based on the concept of Uniform Penny Post and his solution of prepayment, facilitating the safe, speedy and cheap transfer of letters. Hill later served as a government postal official, and he is usually credited with originating the basic concepts of the modern postal service, including the invention of the postage stamp.
